  3. paronomasia (Greek `adapted meaning'). Double
  4. meaning can be accidental, often resulting
  5. from homonymy, or the multiple meaning of
  6. words; puns, however, are deliberate,
  7. intended as jokes or as clever and compact
  8. remarks. The success of a pun is often a
  9. matter of taste; if an ominous horoscope is
  10. called a `horrorscope' or a genetic
  11. experiment is characterized as producing
  12. `designer genes', this may or may not be
  13. regarded as witty, useful, or relevant. Puns
  14. may depend on either the sound or the look of
  15. a word, or may require some modification of
  16. the words in question to produce their effect
  17. (for example, a political meeting described
  18. as `coming apart at the themes', echoing
  19. `seams').
